What is a carer assessment?

A Carers Assessment is the opportunity for you to tell someone what impact caring has on your life. The assessment may be carried out on the telephone, in a community venue, or in some circumstances at your home. The assessment will look at how caring affects your life, including for example, physical, mental and emotional needs, and whether you are able or willing to carry on caring.

Before the assessment, sit down and think about your role as a carer. Be honest about the effects that caring has on your life. Without support, will you struggle to provide the care needed? Don’t feel that it is your responsibility to provide all the care needs or feel guilty if you can’t do it all. In many cases, it is better for trained professionals to carry out certain tasks - they have the time and energy to dedicate to the job. You might not have this if you yourself are elderly or you are also juggling work and/or a family

Before the assessment think about the following:
  • Will you be able to talk freely if the person you care for is present?
  • Do you want or are you able to carry on caring?
  • If you are prepared to continue, is there anything, or anyone that could make life easier for you?
  • Without support is there a risk that you might not be able to continue caring?
  • Do you have any physical or mental health problems, including stress or depression, that make your role as a carer more difficult?
  • Does being a carer affect your relationships with other people, including family and friends?
  • If you have a job, does being a carer cause problems?
  • If you are struggling with any aspects of your caring role – who or what could help you?
  • Would you like more time to yourself so that you can sleep, take a break or enjoy some leisure activity?
  • Would you like to do some training, voluntary work or paid work?
What will happen following an assessment
If a carer appears to have needs for support an assessment is undertaken. The carer will then be informed of whether or not they are entitled to support from Adult Care. To establish eligibility for support the national eligibility criteria for carers will be applied, a carer meets the eligibility threshold if all three criteria are met.

Support
If a carer has eligible support needs a support plan will be produced. The plan, which will be carer led, will set how the carers needs will be met.

If you have eligible needs, you will discuss with the assessor a wide range of options to meet those needs. This could include:
  • Access to a support group
  • Training to help you continue caring
  • A sum of money for you to access a universal service in the community or a piece of equipment to meet your needs
  • Increasing the care package of the cared for to help you have some time for yourself
  • Help with making sure you are claiming all the benefits you are entitled to
If it has been determined you have needs but they are not eligible, you will be given information and advice on:
  • what can be done to meet or reduce the needs or
  • what preventative measures might be taken to prevent or delay the development of needs you have.
If you do not have eligible needs you can still access the following support from Carers FIRST:
  • Access to a support group
  • Training to help you continue caring
  • Help with making sure you are claiming all the benefits you are entitled to
  • Access to information advice and guideance through telephone support, face to face appointments, regular What's On Guides and monthly e-bulletins
