Overview

Hear 4 U is a programme of listening services designed to support Carers who are registered with Carers First.

These fantastic services are provided by a team of dedicated and friendly volunteers.  


Hear 4 U: Face to Face Befriending (currently SW Kent only)
The Carer receives a regular visit a volunteer Befriender who provides a listening ear, emotional support and signposting to other services, perhaps over a cup of tea or whilst out shopping or taking a walk in the park!  
All our volunteers are carefully matched by shared experiences or interests, this enables a partnership to develop more easily.  Our volunteers often live in the same locality.

Hear 4 U: Telephone Befriending
The Carer receives a regular phone call from a volunteer ‘Telephone Befriender’ who provides a listening ear, emotional support and signposting to other services. 
 
Aims of the Befriending Schemes

These services aims to help to alleviate social isolation by fulfilling emotional needs and contributing to positive mental health.  We hope that the befriending scheme will enable Carers to build self confidence, and assist them to establish other contacts in their community.  We hope to achieve this by giving our Carers undivided attention!

Definition of Befriending

Befriending is a relationship that is initiated, supported and monitored by a voluntary organisation.  As a volunteer there are some important issues to consider, such as boundary issues and confidentiality. This is a free service and is usually provided once per fortnight.

Hear 4 U: Volunteer Counselling (Currently available in Medway only)
The Carer receives one to one counselling with a volunteer Counsellor, who may be fully qualified or part qualified undertaking a student placement.

What do we require from a Volunteer Befriender

An offer of time – as much or little as you have!

Reliable and committed

A smile – encouraging our CARERS to see life in a more positive way and feel valued

Empathy and patience

Non judgemental

Understanding of the importance of confidentiality
