Young adult carers cooking up a storm

Ten young adult carers aged 16-25 from Lincolnshire recently took part in a virtual cooking project designed to increase their confidence, meet other young people and most importantly, have fun.

The project was aimed at low-income families and those who have been identified as struggling in the pandemic. The young people received home recipe boxes delivered to their door and were supported by staff and chefs working over Zoom.

There were lots of lovely individual stories that came out of the project including one family cooking extra to share with their neighbour who lives alone.

We’ve received some great feedback, with one of the participants expressing how the sessions has improved their confidence:

“I think these cooking sessions on Zoom has made me more confident in myself and I don't feel alone because I am cooking with other carers. I also feel like I am confident in cooking different foods what I wouldn't have tried before and learned about seasoning and more ingredients to put into food.”

We will now be rolling out the project to support young adult carers we work with in Medway and Newham. Email us at hello@carersfirst.org.uk if you are interested in taking part.
