A Story For Young Carers

Watch the animation here.

Carers First and Amazing Minds have launched a powerful new animated film, A Story for Young Carers, now being offered to help children understand caring and know where to find support.

Created especially for children aged 7–12, the short animation gently explores what it can feel like to regularly help someone at home — and reassures children that support is available.

The film launches as part of Young Carers Action Day on Wednesday 11 March.

This year’s theme, “Fair Futures for Young Carers,” calls for action to ensure children who help someone in their family have the same opportunities to learn, grow and thrive as their peers — with the right support around them.

Naresh Katnoria, Service Manager for Carers First Medway, said: “Many children who regularly help someone at home don’t see themselves as ‘young carers’ — they just see it as part of family life. That’s why this film is so important. It helps children recognise their experiences in a safe, relatable way.

“Most of us will support someone we love at some point. But no child should feel they have to carry that responsibility alone. With the right support, caring can feel lighter, more manageable and less isolating.

“By sharing this animation in schools, we’re helping children understand that support is normal, available and there for them early — not just at crisis point.”

The animation was developed in partnership with Amazing Minds, a creative studio specialising in storytelling that supports children’s emotional wellbeing. Known for producing accessible, child-centred content for schools and community organisations, Amazing Minds worked closely with Carers First and local children to ensure the film reflects real experiences in a sensitive and empowering way.

Through creative workshops with children in Medway, the team explored how it feels to balance school, friendships and helping someone. Those conversations shaped the story of a small robot whose battery slowly runs down as it tries to manage everything on its own.

Through this simple but powerful metaphor, the film shows that while supporting someone at home may feel like a normal part of life, no child should have to carry that responsibility without support.

The animation is being shared directly with schools to spark conversation, increase understanding and encourage early support — because good care is supported care.

Young Carers Action Day, organised by Carers Trust, has raised awareness of young people who help care for someone at home for over a decade.

Carers First supports children and families across Medway, Lincolnshire, Southend-on-Sea and Merton — both in person and online — offering space to talk, time to recharge, help at school and connections with other children in similar situations.
